The first considerations for all Phases of The BlastThrough Drill:

Be aware of your grip pressure. Hold the club as softly as you feel that you can still maintain control. You can probably hold it much softer than you think. Consider how softly you grip a baseball to throw it.

Your Arms should feel as though they are hanging from your Shoulders.

The BlastThrough Drill is essentially a Pivot Drill. The BlastThrough refers to the work of the Pivot (Feet, Knees. Hips, and Shoulders) to move your Arms, Hands, and Club completely, smoothly, and dynamically through Impact to the end of the stroke.

Take a look at the characteristics of the static positions, then study the

dynamics of the changes from each of the phases.

Learn these Positions statically, then use the Pivot to put them together Dynamically!

Position 1: Top

Clubshaft level and parallel.

The Shoulders are 90 degrees closed.

The Hips are 45 degrees closed.

Position 2: Mid Downswing

Clubshaft has not gone outside of the Hands, and is near the Right Shoulder.

The Shoulders are nearly 45 degrees closed.

The Hips are square..

Position 3: 2/3 Finish

The Clubshaft is just above the level of the hands into the Finish.

The Shoulders are more than 90 degrees open.

The Hips are 90 degrees open.

Position 4: Full Finish

The Clubshaft goes as far as it wants to go. Don't force it, don't help it.

The Shoulders are well past 90 degrees.

The Hips are 90 degrees plus.

Position 4: Full Finish

Unfortunately, Blobman does not go to a full finish. This a full Hogan Finish.

The Clubshaft goes as far as it wants to go. Don't force it, don't help it.

The Shoulders are well past 90 degrees.

The Hips are 90 degrees plus.

Now let’s learn how to put these Static Positions, into Dynamic motion with the Pivot!

Phase 1

Phase 2

Phase One

The Top

The Dynamically Loaded StartDown:

Use your Hips and Trunk to implement a push into the Right Foot. The Righ Foot push will initiate a slide. Your Left Hip move slightly left of your target line while keeping your Right Hip and Right Shoulder back and down. Your Rightside does not feel like it is turning; instead, you should be feeling a Sidebend. Using your Pivot, do not allow the Clubhead to move farther from the target than the hands.

Phase Two

Mid Downswing

The Dynamic BlastThrough:

Do phase Two in two parts. Do phase One. Make sure to recognize if you have successfully executed phase One. Now, move to a position just past the hands level into the followthrough in one fluid motion. Think of this work as being produced through the downward tilting of the Right Shoulder and the dynamic push of the Right Foot and Right Hip moving to the designated location. The direction of the Right Hip travel is on a line 20 degrees to the right of the target line.

Phase 3

Phase 4

Phase Three

2/3 Finish

Blastrough from the Top

Do Phase Three in one fluid motion. First, move from the Top to the spot between followthrough and Finish. (Arms level with the ground and Clubhead just slightly past the hands) First, do this slowly to understand how to swing to the proper position. Then move as fast as your Hips can smoothly!

Since golf instruction started using video, one of the downsides of using it to inform and assist in creating player improvement has been using and emphasizing positions. Notably, while we use positions in the Breakthrough Drill, the more critical part of the drill is linking, sequencing, and having this work produce a flowing motion into the Fulk Finish!

Phase Four

Full Finish

Blastrough to the Full Finish

Do phase four by moving as smoothly and completely as possible from the Top to the complete Finish!. As in phase three, first, do it slowly and smoothly, then progress to swing as fast you you can stay smooth. Accomplish this with the Pivot leading and powering as strongly, completely, and as smoothly as possible.
